FAQ: Mila: The smartest, most thoughtful air purifier ever made
For the most up-to-date information about the status of our project, check our project updates on Kickstarter!

What size room will Mila cover?

Mila has a CADR (clear air delivery rate) of 411 m3/hr, with The Basic Breather filter.

What does that mean? It means that Mila can filter a 200 sqft bedroom 8 times per hour, a 400 sqft living room 4 times per hour, and a large 800 sqft open space 2 times per hour.

And what does that mean…? Well, lets look at a pretty severe example where your home air quality is 250 AQI. This is similar to what Californians and Australians experience during forest fires or some of the worst smog days in big cities like Singapore, HK, Shanghai, New Delhi, etc.

In this example it would take Mila 41minutes to filter a 200 sqft bedroom from 250 AQI to 21 AQI, or an 11x Protection Factor. (Note: a 3M face mask is rated at a 10x Protection Factor). And in a large 400 sqft living room it would take Mila 67 minutes to reduce it from 250 AQI to 32 AQI.

Where can I order filters from after the campaign?

We’re currently building a seamless ordering system where you can get new filters from after the campaign. There’s also been a hugely popular request for some sort of regular delivery service, which we’re looking into and will have more to share shortly

Last updated: December 04, 2019 09:32

How do I choose a custom filter?

You can do this two ways:

  1. You can add more to your pledge now if you know what filter you want. Simply add the difference to your total pledge amount and we’ll credit you the extra pledge amount (e.g., if you have $39 credit and would like the Big Sneeze ($49), please add $10 to your total pledge). To make adjustments, please go here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/milacares/mila-the-smartest-most-thoughtful-air-purifier-ever-made/pledge/edit

  2. If you dont know what you want now, that’s ok. When the campaign concludes we will be sending out an email to all backers asking them to select which filter they want as well as add their shipping details.

How long do filters last?

Both HEPA and activated carbon filters need to be replaced regularly. HEPA gets loaded with particulate over time and loses its effectiveness. Interestingly enough, it actually increases in efficiency (ie captures even more particles) as it gets loaded but then reaches an inflection point where it becomes so loaded the airflow begins to drop off.

Activated Carbon, on the other hand, “adsorbs” gasses like chemicals and household odors. Once the carbon gets loaded it’s spent.

We conservatively estimate filters will last 3-6 months depending on your home environment. If you have pets or live in a big city you will be on the low end of the scale. We are conducting a long term filter life test with our supplier and will be updating backers once that is complete.

The ambiguity around filter life has plagued air purifiers for years. Quite honestly most manufacturers just make an educated guess. The “filter alarms” that some purifiers have are just a rudimentary countdown timer. It has no direct relationship to the actual filter life.

We are working to address this longstanding problem. Mila is the first purifier to come equipped with pressure sensors to detect filter life. However, we won’t formally announce this feature until we have more time to test. It’s never been done before so will take a little time for us to validate the prediction algorithms. Once we do it will be enabled on all Milas over the air. Our end goal is for each Mila to precisely determine its own filter life and order replacements as required.

We have also been getting a lot of requests for a filter subscription to reduce cost/hassle. We will be working on that and hope to have it announced before the end of the campaign.

Can you explain the difference between all the filters?

Mila is unique in that it offers custom filters. These filters are based on 2yrs of consumer feedback and research demonstrating the 5 primary reasons people buy purifiers: they suffer from allergies, they have a new baby, they are pregnant, they have pets, or they have recently renovated their home. Mila has designed the best performing filter for each of these consumers.

The specs are as follows:

  1. The Basic Breather:

Includes 45 sqft of H12 HEPA
.

  1. The Critter Cuddler:

Includes 45sqft of H13 HEPA, an anti-allergen coating, a pre-filter for pet hair and coarse particles, and 1lb of activated granular carbon targeting pet odors (ammonia).

  1. The Mama-to-Be:

Includes 45 sqft of H14 Ultra High Efficiency HEPA (99.995%), an anti-bacterial coating, and 1lb of activated granular carb targeting general household odors and VOCs.

There are conclusive studies that show exposure to PM2.5 during the first trimester is directly linked to preterm birth, low birth weight, preeclampsia, and worse. https://americanpregnancy.org/pregnancy-health/how-air-pollution-impacts-pregnancy/.

Furthermore, 2/3’s or pregnant women report themselves as “abnormally sensitive to odors” during pregnancy (Cameron 2007, Nordin 2004). Mila is thoughtful like that :-)

The biggest cost driver on this filter is the anti-bacterial coating. It’s come in more than originally budgeted with our supplier. We are working to find an alternative supplier to get this down. However, we want to manage expectations until we can.

  1. The Rookie Parent:

Includes 45 sqft of H13 HEPA, an anti-bacterial coating, and 1lb of activated granular carbon targeting general household odors and VOCs. See the note above on the coating prices.

  1. Big Sneeze:

Includes 45 sqft of H13 HEPA, an anti-allergen coating, plus 7.5 additional sqft of HEPA bringing the total sqft up to 52.5.

  1. The Home Wrecker:

This includes 45 sqft of H12 HEPA and 1lb of a a potassium Iodide impregnated carbon and zeolite blend targeting formaldehyde, benzenes, chemicals/VOCs, gases and odors.

Formaldehyde is a primary concerns in many countries after home renovation. For example, it’s not uncommon in China for families to let their new apartment outgas for 3 months before they move in. Activated carbon is not as effective for small molecules like formaldehyde. Our Home Wrecker filter targets formaldehyde with a potassium Iodide impregnated carbon and zeolite blend.

Can I use Mila without WiFi?

While you can use Mila without WiFi, it will impact some of her smartest features such as remote control or viewing sensor data from within the Mila app.

Last updated: December 04, 2019 09:32

What is your warranty policy like?

Each Mila comes with the Mila-backed guarantee, which means:

  • An unprecedented 30-day money-back guarantee: If you don’t love Mila, you can return her within 30 days for a full refund, minus shipping and handling.
  • One-Year Warranty: Should something happen with your Mila, no worries—you’re covered.

What is your sustainability policy?

This is important to us and we have had many conversations with backers about this. Our goals are as follows:

  • Short-term: we are using recycled plastics in the filter frame.
- Mid-term: we are working with our filter supplier to design a biodegradable material for the filter frame. It needs to be airtight and rigid, so it’s not trivial.
- Long-term: we are looking at developing a filter exchange program. Unfortunately, the carbon can not be recharged, nor can HEPA be reused. But they are both biodegradable.

Will it be possible to use Mila without a smartphone?

Yup, you can use the device without a smartphone, but the app is gorgeous and really useful so we hope you try it out.

What about privacy?

Mila sends information to our servers as that’s also what helps power some of her smartest functions (e.g., Automagic). However, we take data protection and privacy seriously and use the latest encryption standards over HTTPS, with third party certifications to prevent people from potentially listening in the middle (this is the same type and degree of encryption that financial institutions use). We also limit any personally identifiable information we collect to only what’s absolutely necessary to deliver Mila’s services to you (e.g., your email, your city) and you’ll have full control over how much or how little information you want to add to your profile, and can remove/update this information whenever you’d like. While you can use Mila without WiFi, it will impact some of her smartest features such as remote control or viewing sensor data from within the Mila app.

Does Mila use an Ionizer or generate Ozone?

No, Mila does not use an ionizer because they can generate high amounts of ozone, which is a well-documented lung irritant. In fact, the EPA recommends that any intentional ozone generators (like ionizers) should not be used in occupied spaces. Instead, Mila uses a combination of HEPA + activated carbon – both proven technologies in clearing the air, whether it’s dust, particles or gases and odors. These two filtration methods set the gold standard in the industry by filtering for 99.97% of the total pollutants Thanks to our patent pending filter design, we’re able to pack over 45 sq ft of high quality HEPA material and up to one pound of activated carbon into a single filter – without compromising performance.

Will it require subscription fee?

Nope. There is no subscription fee (e.g. a smart camera would have for cloud storage). However, one of the biggest requests from backers is to add a filter replacement service to reduce the cost and hassle. We are working on this and will announce details soon.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
